During all of these religious and political discussions, I keep hearing from people who try to tell me to lay off because it seems like I’m trying to talk someone into something. I keep hearing people say, “You’re never going to convince them.” I wish people would stop telling me that for one simple reason: it’s not true.
Contrary to popular belief, it’s okay to talk about something in an attempt to convince others of your position. People do it all the time. What do you think sermon is for? But to say that conversations of such a nature are useless is simply not correct. How do I know? Because I was one of those who was convinced. I used to be a theist, until I learned enough to make me think otherwise.
If you never hear new ideas, you’re never going to evolve (so to speak). And by having discussions about important issues we learn things we may never have thought of. And if someone seems to be attempting to change your mind, remember that one of these days you’re going to change opinions about certain things. So, it’s okay to talk about things that might upset your delicate understanding of the world. And it’s okay to let someone convince you that what you believe may be slightly flawed or downright incorrect. No matter what someone may say to you, it’s not them that make the final decision, it’s you.
